Overview

The Subclass 801 Onshore Partner Visa is the permanent stage of the combined 820/801 partner visa application. It is usually granted to holders of the temporary Subclass 820 visa after approximately two years from the original lodgement date, provided the relationship is genuine and ongoing.

Once granted, the 801 visa allows you to live permanently in Australia, sponsor eligible family members, access Medicare, and work or study without restrictions. After four years of permanent residency, you may be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship.

The temporary 820 stage is typically granted within 3–6 months. The permanent 801 stage is automatically reassessed at the 2-year mark from the original lodgement date (or sooner if you have been in a genuine relationship for 3+ years or have children together).
Yes. The temporary 820 visa grants full work rights. You can work for any employer in any occupation from the date the 820 is granted.
The Department requires evidence across four categories: financial aspects (joint accounts, shared expenses), household arrangements (shared lease or mortgage), social aspects (photos, travel together), and mutual commitment (statutory declarations from family and friends).
