Overview

The TSS 482 Visa includes three streams: the Short-Term stream, Medium-Term stream, and Labour Agreement stream. This visa is set to be replaced by the Skills in Demand (SIV) Visa on 7 December 2024.

Designed to fill urgent skill shortages in specialised fields, the Short-Term Stream allows Australian businesses to sponsor overseas workers for up to 2 years, extendable to 4 years in specific cases.

For businesses requiring skilled workers for a longer period, the Medium-Term Stream allows visa holders to work for up to 4 years. This stream offers a potential pathway to permanent residency.

This stream is available to employers who have entered into a Labour Agreement with the Australian government, allowing them to sponsor overseas workers for positions not listed on standard occupation lists.

This stream allows family members of 482 visa holders to join them in Australia, with options for work rights depending on individual circumstances.

The short-term stream is valid for 2 years and covers occupations on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). The medium-term stream is valid for 4 years and covers occupations on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Only the medium-term stream provides a pathway to permanent residency via the 186 ENS visa after 3 years.
You must be employed by your approved sponsor. If you wish to change employers, your new employer must be approved as a sponsor and must nominate you. During the transition, you may apply for a bridging visa. F4MG manages employer transitions to ensure you maintain lawful status throughout.
Labour market testing (LMT) requires your employer to demonstrate they advertised the position to the Australian labour market and were unable to find a suitable Australian candidate. LMT must be conducted within 4 months before lodging the nomination. Certain exemptions apply. F4MG advises employers on compliant LMT processes.
The government visa application charge for a 482 visa is approximately AUD 3,115 for the primary applicant. Employers must also pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy, which varies by business size and visa duration.
